The drama and excitement of the Olympics might be behind us, but the summer of sport continues this week as the Paralympics get underway. With millions of Tweets, the roar of the crowd on Twitter is as loud as ever. 

This year’s Paralympic Games has grown in size and inclusion, with 22 sports on show and badminton and taekwondo making their first appearance. Here, we highlight some of the #SuperHumans of ParalympicsGB (@ParalympicsGB) who take flight to Tokyo.

Making her debut with @ParalympicsGB is @BethMunro19, who secured gold in her first international taekwondo competition earlier this year. Alongside her are Joe Lane (@joelane0098) and @amytruesdale1, who together form @ParalympicsGB’s first-ever taekwondo team. 

Also making its debut in Tokyo 2020 is badminton, where @ParalympicsGB hope to smash their way to medal position with athletes such as @JackShephard25, who currently stands as number one in the world rankings.  

World champion Para-rower @itslaurenrowles is also Tokyo bound, hoping to row into gold medal position following a successful debut in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Passionate about sharing her story, @itslaurenrowles is ready to write the next chapter at #Tokyo2020.

Twenty-one-year old Fin Graham (@FinGparacyclist) represents Para-cycling for Great Britain and will accompany gold medal holder Kadeena Cox (@kad_c) on the track. 

Wheelchair basketball will witness the return of Paralympic bronze medalist @AbdiJama10 and World Championship MVP @GreggWarburton. For the  @BritWheelBBall women’s team, @JoyHaizelden, who made her debut for Great Britain aged just 15 years old, aims to shoot high and score a medal position for @ParalympicsGB.

In the pool, making her maiden appearance for @ParalympicsGB is @zaramullooly. She will join the phenomenal @EllieSimmonds1, who returns for her fourth Paralympic Games.

Sprinting for a podium place in Para-athletics is @thomasyoungt38, who recently grabbed gold at the European Championships. Long jumper @AliSmith_T38 also hopes to spring into a medal finish at her first Paralympics. Also, in track and field, shot putter Kyron Duke (@dukey_devil) has his sights set on a medal after recently throwing himself into a silver finish at the European Championships.  

Over on the equestrian field, dressage rider @sophiewells90 is ready to add to her medal collection, while world record holder @SirLeePearson flies into Tokyo for an incredible sixth appearance. 

@ParalympicsGB will also be flying the flag with its #ImpossibleToIgnore hashtag, which will generate the GBR emoji.

Rest of the world

Looking beyond the UK, there’s plenty more exciting talent spread across the Paralympic Games. Iran’s inspirational archery champion @nemati_zahra will be looking to defend her crown in Tokyo, while New Zealand’s canoe sprinter @scottmartlew will improve on the bronze medal he picked up earlier in the year at national championships. On two wheels is Spain’s swimmer turned cyclist @RicardoTen_. He makes his Para-cycling debut after recently capturing gold at the Track World Championships. 

The USA’s reigning Para-swimming champion, @JessicaLong, will dive into Tokyo for her fifth Games, hoping to add to her medal tally as the 13-time Paralympic champion.
